When you entered the ballroom, you couldn't believe how many eyes were on you.
But they quickly turned away to continue their conversations in a second. There were men and women dressed in elegant and formal dresses and tuxedos everywhere you looked. There was music playing but it wasn't the type you would dance to. Instead, everyone was mingling and eating finger food.
You looked at the man beside you. England, the one that threw this fancy ball in the first place, was escorting you through the large Victorian castle but now that you found your way to the ballroom he didn't need to assist you anymore. He bowed to you and then left to go eat some scones or something.
Now you were all alone. You didn't have a date but you were invited so you couldn't pass this up. It was a simple world nation get-together ball thing and it was an honor to be invited if you weren't already a big-shot. You recognized lots of people as you wandered around, like Italy talking to Germany and Japan being confused as heck. America seemed to be hanging around the fruit punch bowl in the back where the food was and France was, of course, flirting. You didn't see Russia anywhere but China looked just as confused as Japan did.
"[Name]," someone called your name. You turned around to see England again. "I was wondering, when would you like to perform? Do you want to be the first song or somewhere in the middle?"
Right, you remembered. The real reason you were invited because you were going to perform a song for people to dance to. "How about the second song? That seems nice," you requested.
The English gentleman nodded. "I'll tell the others right away. If you don't mind, Spain will be playing the guitar but the rest will be a karaoke track."
You smiled to reassure him that was fine. Then he went back to the crowd asking them if they were having a great time and whatnot. You rushed into the restroom to check your makeup and your dress because you knew that you were sweating out of worry.
This was your first time performing in front of this many people.
Especially at a fancy ball.
Right when you exited the restroom, you bumped into some man.
"Oh, I am so sorry! I didn't see you there," you quickly apologized as you looked up to see the man.
He had brown short hair and a cowlick sticking up. His eyes were violet behind his glasses and he was wearing a dark purple tux. "Oh, that's alright. It was my fault. I'm Austria, what's your name?"
You blushed but then answered, "M-My name's [name]. You're from one of those rich European countries, right?"
He chuckled. "I guess you could say that. What about you? I don't remember seeing you at any of the world meetings before."
You explained to him how you were only there to perform a song that people were going to dance to and how you were invited. He was a very nice man and you learned that he could play some instruments, especially the piano. The two of you began to talk about music when all of a sudden England stood at the front of the room with a microphone in hand, interrupting your conversation.
"Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention for just a moment," he turned towards you and gestured for you to get up on stage, "May I introduce one of my best friends, miss [last name]."
He grabbed your hand and held it up. The whole crowd clapped their hands in a fancy way and smiled as you curtsied. You looked all around for Austria but he wasn't in the same spot he was just a few minutes before.
After England gave another spiel, he handed you the microphone and you began to sing. Your heart was beating faster than ever before but once you saw the crowd relax while listening to your voice, you too felt a sudden enlightenment. It was actually quite fun singing up there with everyone's eyes up on you. You felt noticed, adored even.
The song you were singing was by a girl named Taylor Swift. The title was "Enchanted". It was a sweet song; something about meeting a boy and having him stuck in your head for a very long time. England wanted you to sing it because he found it very classy, which was strange because he never really did like America's singers all that much.
Once you were done, the whole ballroom erupted in applause and you proudly strutted off stage. When you floated back into the crowd, people kept commenting on how lovely your performance was. You couldn't believe so many people liked it and you yourself felt very encouraged.
England walked over to you and gave you a hug. When you pulled away and looked around, you asked, "England, have you seen where Mr. Austria went? I want to talk to him some more."
He pointed to the hallway at the entrance to the ballroom. "I believe he went to get some fresh air or something a little bit after you reached the middle of the song. I saw him go up in the elevator."
You thanked him for telling you this and headed to the hallway. You made your way through the crowd while thanking them for all the nice comments they gave you, too. When you got in the elevator, you didn't know which floor to go to so you pressed a random button without looking. It was the rooftop.
The first thing you saw was Austria standing by the edge of the roof.
"A-Austria!" You called out his name while walking over to him.
When he saw your face, he smiled. "Oh, hello there, [name]. Your performance was quite lovely. I just needed to step out for a bit."
You were standing right next to him now. "Really? Why?"
He shrugged. "
That song brings back memories."
willing to share?"
You took a step back. "I-I didn't know. I'm sorry if it brought up some bad stuff to think about. I'm actually headed back inside so
He stopped you from leaving by grabbing your hand. "No, [name], don't go. It's not your fault."
Your eyes were locked on each other's while you were lost in his gaze. Somewhere off in the distance, you heard a clock tower ring. It was midnight already.
"A-Ah, I really do have to be heading home now actually." You looked down at your wrist even though you knew you didn't have a watch. "I'm sorry, Austria. I'd like to keep talking to you but England's probably looking all over for me. He said he'd give me a ride home."
Sighing, Austria let go of your hand. Then, his hand actually grabbed you by the waist and he started walking with you to the door.
"In that case," he talked smoothly, "I'll have to enjoy whatever time we have left."
You both walked back inside the building then into the elevator and to the main entrance of the castle. England was standing next to a sleek black limousine looking down at his watch. When he saw you, he opened the car door and you slowly made your way into it.
You looked out the window and saw Austria and England talking for a bit. Well, it was more like Austria told England something and he nodded. Before he walked away, he looked right at you and winked. There was a twinkle in his violet eyes that his glasses couldn't hide.
England smiled at you when he entered the car. "[Name], you didn't tell me you were going to fall in love tonight."
You blushed harder than ever before. "E-England! What do you mean!?"
He rolled his eyes. "Austria wanted me to tell you how 'enchanted' he was to meet you. He specifically told me to use that word, too. Sounds like he wants to see you more."
Before replying, you giggled softly to yourself. "Thanks, England. I'll keep that in mind next time I see him, if I ever do after this."
This night is sparkling
Don't you let it go
Blushing all the way home
I'll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you
